India is a country of more than a billion populations and there exists 28 states with different cultures. The region specific areas have their own style of living as well as different language as well. People in Bengal converse in Bengali, in Gujarat speak Gujarati and so on. Yet all of them seem to be perfectly in sync with each other and the same. The language system in India began from the early Indo – Aryan period where Sanskrit was in vogue. Sanskrit was actually discovered by the European people. And then there was Prakrit that was spoken by the common folk that contained neither any grammar nor any proper pronunciation.

It grew to become the language of the followers of Jainism and broke into a number of languages that we speak today like Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Marathi. The south developed from the Dravidian form, breaking down into Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada and Tamil. All the languages have been affected by Sanskrit and Hindi, at present the most commonly spoken language and people mistake it for being the national language of India, is the Sanskritised form of Khariboli dialect.

Different States Have Their Own State Languages, As Follows

  • State of Andhra Pradesh has Telugu.
  • State of Odisha has Odia.
  • The state of Punjab has Punjabi.
  • State of Kerala has Malayalam.
  • State of Tamil Nadu has Tamil and English.
  • The state of Kashmir has Kashmiri Urdu and Dogri.
  • State of West Bengal has Bengali.
  • The state of Maharashtra has Marathi.
  • State of Karnataka has Kannada.
  • The state of Gujarat has Gujarati.

The Constitution of India adopts Hindi as the official language of India and English as they are the ones most commonly spoken all the over India. India had 14 official languages at first, and then with the inclusion of languages like Nepali and Sindhi and others, it became 18. At present there are as many as 22 official languages of India. The states are permitted to set up their own language for administration purposes and keeping it as the medium of instruction. There are many more local dialects spoken as well. In all there must at least a thousand languages spoken all over India. The connection is yes, Hindi and English but the several mother tongues are spoken by at least 6 billion people. There have been conflicts over this as well, in keeping Hindi as the national language.

Despite all this linguistic issue, people have always stayed connected. One would find easy to learn Odia if one is a Bengali and catch up with other languages as well because they all are connected through some of the common words and usage. After all it’s the people who matter, language can be learnt anytime. People have preserved their language all through these ages and they take a strong cultural and lingual pride in maintaining their languages all over these years. Once you understand the nuances of Tamil, you can understand the language of Malayalam and Telugu and even Kannada because many of them have the same common words.

Language has been a source of connection for Indian since time immemorial. With the presence of so many languages yet, they have always maintained their unity, being the most diverse country of all. There may exist millions of languages but yet, the Indians will always stay connected through their languages and maintain their linguistic pride.
